March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

TBI awareness is something that I didn’t have before becoming a caregiver to a TBI survivor – but even then I didn’t really understand the prevalent lack of awareness until becoming a TBI survivor, that’s when I got to experience it firsthand.  Starting this blog and creating a Twitter account (@MyTBIBlog) has opened me up to new horizons.  Now, I am aware of organizations like the Brain Injury Association of America and their efforts to increase public awareness of this often invisible injury and the extent of the challenges that TBI survivors face.  March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, let’s do all we can to support the effort to educate and inform the public about the incidence of brain injuries and the many challenges that TBI survivors and their families can face.

There are similar organizations in many countries, here are a few I was able to find:

Another resource that has offered a plethora of helpful content for me is Brainline.org (@brainline).  They also have a wealth of information specifically addressing the unique challenges of military veterans and their families as well, at brainline.org/military-veterans.

Twitter exposed me to so many resources that I never knew existed.  If you have a Twitter account, you can follow BIAA (@biaamerica), Brain Injury Canada (@braininjury_CAN) and many other groups who are helping TBI survivors and caregivers, as well as promoting TBI awareness within the general public.  I am just learning to become active in the Twitter medium, most of what I do so far is retweeting posts that link to valuable resources to increase their reach.

As we enter Brain Injury Awareness Month, I encourage you to spread the awareness in the ways that you can.  Join the BIAA #ChangeYourMind campaign today – you will gain access to the campaign resources and be helping a very important and much needed effort.
